Thousands flock in as Kedarnath portals open for pilgrims with grand ceremony

Devotees throng to Kedarnath temple:The doors of the Kedarnath Temple were opened to devotees on Wednesday at sharp 8am, marking the formal start of the Kedarnath leg of the Char Dham Yatra 2026. The temple was reopened with traditional rituals and prayers amid tight security and elaborate arrangements by the Uttarakhand government.

Dehradun: The portals of the Kedarnath shrine, revered as the 11th Jyotirlinga, were opened for pilgrims at 8am on Wednesday in a ceremony witnessed by thousands of pilgrims.The ritual began at 5am and culminated with Rawal Bhimashankara Linga, accompanied by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and religious leaders, entering the temple’s sanctum sanctorum to perform worship.

The temple was decorated with over 51 quintals of flowers, and as the doors opened, petals were showered from a helicopter.The Panchmukhi Utsav Doli of Lord Kedarnath had reached the shrine the previous evening, travelling from its winter seat at Shri Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath via Guptkashi, Phata and Gaurikund.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on X, wrote: “On the sacred land of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, the portals of Shri Kedarnath Dham have today been opened for all devotees with complete rituals and traditions.

This Kedarnath Dham and Char Dham yatra is a divine celebration of our faith, unity and rich traditions. These journeys also offer us a glimpse of India’s Sanatan culture.”The first puja at the shrine was performed in the PM’s name. Dhami extended greetings to citizens across the country and said that the state govt has made extensive arrangements to ensure the Char Dham yatra is safe, well-organised and convenient. He urged residents of the state to maintain a spirit of service and hospitality towards pilgrims arriving from across the country and abroad.Kedarnath continues to witness the highest turnout of devotees among the Char Dham shrines, with record online bookings highlighting its significance as a major pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Shiva.
