Three people were injured on Monday in an explosion at a residential building in Monaco, with authorities describing the incident as a deliberate attack.

The blast occurred around 9:00 pm local time (1900 GMT) in a residential building on a street near the French border. The explosion has been described by officials as “very likely an attack."

Monaco’s Minister of State Christophe Mirmand told AFP, “The blast at a residential building was ‘very likely an attack’," adding that the investigation was ongoing.

Public prosecutor Stephane Thibault said a suspect had left a bag or package in the building’s lobby before leaving the scene. He added that there was no immediate indication of why the building may have been targeted.

A couple in their 50s or 60s sustained life-threatening injuries in the explosion, while a 13-year-old, believed to be “very likely related to the couple," suffered less serious injuries, Mirmand said, without disclosing their nationality.

Officials said the explosive device appeared to contain bolts and buckshot.

“This is the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has taken place in the principality," Mirmand said.

French media reported that police were searching for a suspect seen on surveillance footage leaving a backpack at the entrance of the building shortly before the explosion. BFM TV, citing the principality’s prosecutor general, described the device as a “parcel bomb."

Eric Ciotti, the right-wing mayor of nearby Nice, wrote on X: “The attack committed this evening is a tragedy for Monaco."

Monaco police have not yet issued an official comment on the investigation.
