The death toll in the Kolkata warehouse collapse case has risen to 14, according to sources in the Kolkata Police, reported IANS. This number includes two unidentified persons as well.
The incident happened in Taratala area of South Kolkata on June 24. Rescue operations are ongoing to look for people who still might be stuck under the rubble.
Forces of the Indian Army have also joined the effort. On Thursday, with the help of Army’s advanced ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system, rescuers were able to pull out five more bodies, according to a report by Press Trust of India.
With those, the toll had risen to 11. Today, that number has reached 14. The total number of affected individuals who have been pulled out of the rubble by authorities was reported to be 30 till yesterday, according to sources quoted in the report.
Talking about the intensifying efforts to take out anyone still under the debris, senior section engineer of the Eastern Railway, Tarun Kumar Mondol, said, as quoted by IANS, “we have brought a plasma cutting set to cut the large beams, if required, to assist the NDRF in the rescue operation. We received instructions from our headquarters, and we have been working here since yesterday. The rain caused some problems, but the work is now progressing faster."
Ten people had died either right at the site or shortly after the incident, according to officials, quoted in the PTI report. One person had died while receiving treatment, taking the toll to eleven by yesterday.
Nineteen were injured and admitted to a state-run hospital for treatment. Three more of them have now succumbed to their injuries.
Out of the three people who died, one has been identified as 56-year-old Swapan Mondol. The other two unidentified individuals are believed to be approximately 45 years of age.
Heavy rains had earlier disrupted the rescue operations. Police personnel, fire services officers, personnel from National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and the Army remain deployed at the site.
The plot on which the warehouse was being built on leasehold is owned by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port. A sou motu case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and other relevant charges, has been registered by the Kolkata Police.
So far, five people have been arrested in the case. This includes warehouse owner Shambunath Behera, structural engineer Kamal Samanta, Gulzar Hussain, Supervisor of Ayan Traders, labour supplier Dibakar Bhandari and Abdul Hamid.
The police are trying to determine whether any violations of safety norms had taken place. The warehouse, on the Transport Depot Road, was owned leased by Behera Brothers.
