After a video went viral on social media allegedly showing inmates using digital devices inside Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, authorities recovered three mobile phones concealed inside a pipeline within the jail premises.

Earlier this week, a clip surfaced that purportedly shows inmates claiming they had access to mobile phones, television and streaming services such as Netflix. In the footage, some prisoners can be heard discussing the IPL and speaking casually about the matches, suggesting a comfortable routine inside the facility.

Officials began probing the matter after the video went viral. During a surprise inspection, authorities found that inmates were being relocated to different barracks according to the alphabetical order of their names, and investigators suspect the footage may have been recorded during this transition.

Police identified the inmates involved as Darshan, Abhi and Andrews, who are currently lodged in connection with a murder case reported near Hennur. According to investigators, Darshan allegedly encouraged Andrews to record the video. A case has been filed against the trio at the Parappana Agrahara police station, and they have since been moved to a quarantine cell.

Action has also been taken against prison staff. Three warders — Shivananda Karlabatti, Niranjan A. Kamath and Hanumanthappa Hadapad — were suspended over alleged negligence linked to the incident.

During the search operation, Chief Superintendent (Prisons) Anshu Kumar and his team recovered the phones concealed in milk packets and hidden inside the pipeline about three feet deep. Officials said such depth could prevent detectors from identifying the devices or other contraband.

Senior officer Alok Kumar said the episode may be connected to recent administrative measures aimed at disrupting communication networks among inmates by reorganising barracks. As part of the reshuffle, Darshan — the elder brother of Abhi and also an accused in the case — had been moved to a quarantine barrack on March 27, shortly before the videos surfaced.

When questioned, the inmates reportedly claimed that a Nigerian national who had been lodged in the prison two years earlier had handed over the phones, SIM cards and a charger before his release. Authorities have also detected active mobile network signals within parts of the prison and have warned the telecom provider to take corrective steps.

Despite the breach, officials said reforms in prison administration will continue and disciplinary proceedings against staff are underway. Investigators also found clips showing other inmates using mobile phones to watch movies on OTT platforms.
