Three civil police officers have been suspended after it was found that they allowed Kodi Sunil, an accused in a high profile murder case, to consume alcohol while in custody. The suspension follows an internal inquiry into the incident which took place on 17th July.
According to report, the lapse occurred while the accused was being transported from the Thalassery court. On the way, the escorting policemen stopped at a hotel for dinner, where Sunil was allegedly provided an opportunity to drink alcohol.
The matter came to light during a routine review of custody procedures, prompting senior officials to take swift disciplinary action. Sources indicated that the suspension is pending further investigation, with departmental proceedings likely to follow.
The police authorities have termed the incident a serious breach of protocol. “Strict action will be taken against any officer compromising security or violating custody rules,” a senior officer said
The incident has raised questions about the monitoring of undertrial prisoners during transit, especially in sensitive cases. The department is expected to review escort procedures to prevent similar lapses
