Three years on, Maharashtra road safety meeting yet be held

Mumbai: Maharashtra has not convened its statutory State Road Safety Council meeting in over three years, despite reporting over one lakh accidents and more than 50,000 deaths during the period, as per officials.The last meeting of the State Road Safety Council, chaired by the transport minister, was held on April 4, 2023. Since then, more than 38 months have passed without a single meeting, even though rules mandate that it meet at least once in six months. Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik assured it would be convened in the first week of July. “The Centre has prescribed certain road safety guidelines and parameters. We are preparing a three-year road safety plan for roads under the MMRDA, MSRDC, PWD, and local bodies,” Sarnaik added.
