Tim Cook's glasses might be a clue to what Apple's smart glasses will look like

Apple's smart glasses are coming in 2027, and Tim Cook's own frames might be a preview. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports the company is testing at least four styles for its first pair, codenamed N50—one of which mirrors the slim rectangular glasses Cook wears. Built from premium acetate and designed entirely in-house, the display-free glasses will lean heavily on an upgraded Siri, expected to arrive with iOS 27.

Apple is getting into the smart glasses game. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter Sunday that the company is developing its first pair, codenamed N50, with a reveal planned for late 2026 or early 2027 and a retail launch sometime in 2027.And if you want a hint at what they might look like, start with the CEO. One of the four frame styles Apple is currently testing is a slim rectangular design modelled after the glasses Tim Cook wears. The others include a large rectangular frame reminiscent of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a larger oval or circular design, and a smaller, more refined oval variant. Apple could launch some or all of them. Colorways in testing include black, ocean blue, and light brown.

Unlike Meta and Google, Apple is building its glasses all alone

While Google and Samsung are partnering with Warby Parker for their frames, and Meta leans on EssilorLuxottica for the Ray-Ban collab, Apple is building everything in-house. The frames are made from acetate—more durable and upmarket than the plastic most competitors use. Gurman says Apple wants the glasses to have an immediately identifiable silhouette, the kind of look the company internally calls the "icon."

The camera design adds to that: instead of the circular lens cutouts on Meta's glasses, Apple is testing vertically oriented oval lenses with surrounding lights.

The glasses have no display, so Siri has to do the heavy lifting

Don't expect a screen. The N50 is built around everyday utility—photos, videos, calls, music, notifications, and voice interaction through Siri. Gurman reports the glasses are part of a wider AI wearables push at Apple that also includes camera-equipped AirPods and a pendant device, all meant to give Siri and Apple Intelligence a live feed of the user's surroundings. That upgraded Siri is slated to arrive with iOS 27. Apple has stumbled with Siri before—the glasses will be the biggest test yet of whether it has actually fixed it.
