The death of a 46-year-old labourer in Kadugodi reported on June 26 took a shocking turn after his minor daughter allegedly confided in her uncle about suspicious circumstances surrounding her father’s demise. Her tip-off prompted a police investigation that ultimately led to the cracking of a murder case which was initially dismissed as a natural death.
Based on the complaint filed by Raghavendra, brother of the deceased, the Kadugodi police detained Muniratna, 40, wife of the deceased Babu, and her cousin, Ramamurthy, 28, who after detailed questioning allegedly confessed to the crime.
According to the police, Babu, a native of Malur was staying in Vajarahalli at a rented accommodation with his wife and two minor daughters. The couple were daily wage labourers and Babu was allegedly addicted to alcohol, and used to harass his wife regularly .
Unable to bear his harassment, Muniratna allegedly decided to get ride of him and sought the help of her cousin, Ramamurthy. As per the plan, on July 26, when Babu came home drunk as usual and started harassing Muniratna, she along with Ramamurthy allegedly attacked him with a machete and rolling pin, killing him on the spot.
They later cooked up a story that Babu died due to an accident in an inebriated state and took his body in an ambulance to their home town and cremated him.
Meanwhile, the younger daughter allegedly narrated the incident on how the duo attacked Babu and killed him to Raghavendra, Babu’s brother.
The duo have been arrested on the charges of murder and the weapons used to kill the accused have been recovered, said the police. The police have sent the elder daughter of the couple to the State home for girls for counselling , while the statement of the younger daughter has been recorded for further investigation.
