The political atmosphere in Diamond Harbour reached a fever pitch on Wednesday, as the high-profile constituency in West Bengal went to the polls under a security blanket of unprecedented proportions. Long considered the impregnable bastion of Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the de facto second-in-command of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the region saw a deployment that moved beyond standard paramilitary presence to include anti-terror specialists from the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
An Unprecedented Security Lockdown
The decision by the Election Commission (EC) to station NIA sleuths alongside thousands of central force personnel marks a significant escalation in electoral oversight. Historically, Diamond Harbour has been the epicentre of allegations regarding booth capturing and systemic rigging—a template the opposition frequently derides as the “Diamond Harbour Model".
By Wednesday morning, the constituency resembled a fortress. The presence of the NIA followed intelligence reports and the recent discovery of crude bomb stockpiles in the South 24 Parganas district. The central agency’s mandate was clear: to prevent the use of explosives and thwart any organised attempts to disrupt the democratic process. This heightened vigilance was further underscored by the presence of Ajay Pal Sharma, the Uttar Pradesh-cadre “encounter specialist" observer, who was seen personally patrolling sensitive booths in the Falta and Diamond Harbour segments.
BJP Claims Of State-Sponsored Intimidation, Cross-Border Smuggling
BJP leaders, including IT cell chief Amit Malviya, have frequently alleged a climate of state-sponsored intimidation and cross-border smuggling in the region. The opposition argues that the astronomical victory margins MP Abhishek Banerjee secured in 2019 (3.2 lakh) and 2024 (7.1 lakh) were not merely products of popularity but of a closed ecosystem where opposition polling agents were allegedly prevented from entering booths.
On Wednesday, these tensions boiled over as the BJP shared footage purportedly showing tape placed over the “Lotus" symbol on EVMs in several booths, prompting an immediate EC probe.
A Bastion Under Siege
For Abhishek Banerjee, Diamond Harbour is more than just a seat; it is his laboratory for governance and political muscle. The TMC vigorously defends the “Diamond Harbour Model", pointing to the rapid development of health infrastructure and the successful management of the Covid-19 pandemic as the real reasons for its dominance.
However, the 2026 assembly polls have tested this narrative like never before. With five local police officers suspended by the EC just days before polling for “failure to maintain neutrality", and NIA agents monitoring the ground in real-time, the “Diamond Harbour Model" has faced its most rigorous audit to date.
