Madurai: Rejuvenation of the Vaigai river is people’s responsibility and therefore youth force needs to be mobilised for the same, failing which the Lok Bhavan will take charge, Tamil Nadu Governor R V Arlekar said.Speaking at Sourashtra College in Madurai on Thursday, Arlekar urged the younger generation to participate in environmental conservation efforts, particularly the rejuvenation and restoration of the Vaigai river, citing its cultural and ecological significance.He also said that society and the general public should come forward to recognise and felicitate Kirti Chakra awardees and Armed Forces veterans in their respective localities, acknowledging their valour and service to the nation.Recalling the contributions of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, he described him as a great leader who stood at the forefront of India’s freedom struggle. He highlighted the role of the Indian National Army and said its significance in India’s independence movement was widely acknowledged across the country.The governor underscored the need for in-depth study and greater awareness of Bose’s contributions and urged that this legacy be passed on to younger generations.
He also said Tamil Nadu had a rich tradition of freedom fighters who made contributions to the nation’s independence.The governor said patriotism must be instilled in the minds of all citizens, particularly the youth, to build a strong and progressive nation. He appreciated the role of the Centre of South Indian Studies in promoting historical and cultural awareness.
