A series of disturbing videos purportedly showing toddlers being subjected to abuse at a crèche located on the campus of an IT company in east Bengaluru has surfaced on social media platform X, triggering widespread outrage and a police investigation.

The videos, which are now being widely shared online, allegedly show caregivers mistreating children aged between two and three years inside the daycare facility.

In one of the clips, a toddler is seen being locked inside a toilet.

The videos have sparked serious concerns over the treatment of children at the daycare centre, where most of the toddlers are the children of IT professionals working at the company.

According to the police, the alleged abuse came to light after a child helpline official received four videos and alerted authorities.

Police sources said the footage was recorded by a staff member whose friend had been dismissed from the same daycare centre last month.

Following the complaint, the HAL Police registered a case against five nannies identified as Manjula, Vijayalakshmi, Bhavani, Sindhu and Bindu.

They have been booked under provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act relating to cruelty against children, as well as Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal intimidation.

Police said the videos allegedly depict multiple instances of abuse.

Apart from placing toddlers inside a washing machine and spraying water into their mouths with a toilet jet spray, the accused caregivers allegedly forced children to sit on Western-style commodes and threatened them into silence if they did not comply.

As part of the investigation, police inspected the daycare premises on Wednesday and collected CCTV footage for examination.

Notices have also been served to all five accused, directing them to appear for questioning.

A senior police officer said investigators would also speak to the parents of the toddlers to ascertain whether they had observed any signs of abuse or whether the children had complained of mistreatment after returning home.

Police said that under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, cruelty towards children by those entrusted with their care can attract a punishment ranging from three to ten years’ imprisonment.

The investigation remains underway, with authorities examining the authenticity of the videos, analysing CCTV footage and recording statements from those connected with the daycare centre.
