Tamil Nadu’s skies may still hold a few surprises, yet the feared storm appears to be fading. With a fresh update, Pradeep John offers clarity as the state awaits the next spell

Private meteorologist Pradeep John has stated that this year’s spell of heavy rain in Chennai has come to an end. Speaking at an event in Chennai, the forecaster, widely known as 'Tamilnadu Weatherman', noted that the city may still experience moderate rainfall on December 16 and 17.

He explained that moderate rain is likely across regions stretching from Puducherry and the Cuddalore delta through to the southern districts on December 9 and 10. While heavy rainfall for Chennai has concluded for the year, some showers are expected to continue in the delta belt and the southern parts of Tamil Nadu.

When questioned about the impact of Cyclone Titva, he remarked that the heavy rain originally forecast for Sunday eventually occurred on Monday instead. Districts surrounding Chennai received significant rainfall, with areas around the city recording up to 20 centimetres owing to the cyclone. However, places such as Kanchipuram and Vellore, where heavier rain had been expected, received comparatively less. Even so, he added that the overall volume of rainfall typically associated with a cyclone had indeed been met.

Addressing the possibility of a new cyclone forming, he confirmed that the likelihood remains low at present.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain in a few places across Tamil Nadu until December 13.
