A new twist has emerged in Formula 1’s political landscape, with Mercedes reportedly entering the race to purchase a stake in Alpine F1 Team — the same investment that Christian Horner has been targeting for a potential return to the sport.

According to reports from The Telegraph, Horner’s attempt to secure a foothold in Formula 1 through Alpine could face an unexpected obstacle: his long-time rival Toto Wolff.

Horner Plotting F1 Comeback

Horner, who was dismissed as CEO and team principal of Red Bull Racing last season, has been exploring ways to re-enter the F1 paddock.

One route involves joining a consortium aiming to acquire the 24% stake in Alpine currently owned by Otro Capital, an American private equity firm that invested in the Enstone-based team in 2023.

However, Horner’s ambition to eventually become a majority owner of the team could face complications. Renault Group, Alpine’s parent company, is unlikely to sell enough equity to allow a full takeover.

Wolff Leading Surprise Mercedes Bid

The situation has become even more intriguing with reports that Wolff is now leading a Mercedes-backed bid for the same 24% stake.

If successful, the deal would give Mercedes a financial foothold in a rival team.

Alpine executive adviser Flavio Briatore had previously confirmed that Horner was interested in the shares as part of a consortium earlier this year.

At the time, Briatore said that “a few groups" were interested in Otro Capital’s stake, though he did not mention Mercedes as a potential buyer.

Strategic Implications for F1

Wolff’s interest is particularly notable because Mercedes already has a long-term technical relationship with Alpine.

Starting with the 2026 power unit regulations, Mercedes will supply Alpine with engines and gearboxes, an agreement expected to run until at least 2030.

A Mercedes-linked ownership stake in Alpine could therefore deepen that relationship, while also complicating the political balance within Formula 1.
