A train driver was killed and 89 people were injured after two trains collided north of London on Friday evening. The crash happened near Bedford at about 5:15 p.m. Both trains were travelling towards London’s St. Pancras station when they struck each other.
Police confirmed that one person died in the accident. Emergency services declared a major incident and sent several teams to the scene, including an air ambulance and specialist rescue units.
The East of England Ambulance Service said 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 22 others were seriously hurt and 56 had minor injuries.
Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), said the person who died was a train driver.
Passengers described chaotic scenes after the collision. Peter Knapp, who was travelling on the rear train, said there was no warning before the impact.
“I was thrown into the seat in front of me and then saw smoke," he said. “People were crying and screaming. They were scared and confused."
Knapp said he saw passengers with broken legs and bleeding injuries and managed to escape through a small gap in the train doors.
East Midlands Railway said the collision involved the 4:40 p.m. service from Corby to St. Pancras and the 3:50 p.m. train from Nottingham heading to the same station. The operator cancelled all trains to and from St. Pancras for the rest of Friday and said Saturday’s timetable had not yet been confirmed.
