Police in Bihar seized liquor-laden horses used for cross-border smuggling, exposing a bizarre tactic as smugglers train animals to evade night patrols

In a bizarre turn of events, police in Bihar’s Bettiah intercepted two horses used to smuggle liquor across the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border. These animals had been trained to operate alone, often traveling under the cover of night, successfully evading capture multiple times while ferrying liquor worth lakhs.
Since Bihar’s prohibition on alcohol, smugglers have increasingly turned to unconventional means—using animals as couriers alongside humans. The horses were found carrying cartons of foreign liquor strapped to their backs, crossing the Gandak River through the Diara region to reach destinations within Bihar.
This unusual operation came to light on the night of March 11, 2025, during a routine patrol by the Nautan police led by SHO Rajesh Kumar. Officers seized four cartons—around 34 litres—of foreign liquor from one horse. However, the smugglers escaped, and some of the horses fled the scene.
Sources say these horses are typically bought in villages along the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border and are trained specifically for nocturnal smuggling routes.
Liquor smugglers continue to employ ingenious and unexpected tactics to sidestep enforcement. The use of horses as cross-border carriers underscores both their resourcefulness and the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing the trade.
SP Shaurya Suman confirmed that heightened surveillance is underway in border regions, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those behind these illicit activities.
