Bengalureans face steep bus fare hikes for Ugadi and Ramzan, with prices on key routes like Bengaluru-Mangaluru soaring to Rs 4500-5500. Many opt to stay back or travel early.

Planning to head home for Ugadi or Ramzan this year may come with an unpleasant surprise for Bengalureans. Private bus ticket prices from the city have surged sharply, leaving many travellers frustrated. Routes that usually cost a few hundred rupees are now running into thousands. For many families, the cost of going home has suddenly become a serious burden.

This spike is not entirely unexpected, but the scale of the increase has caught many off guard. Every festive season sees a jump in demand, as thousands of people travel back to their hometowns. Private bus operators take advantage of this surge, often increasing fares significantly. This year, however, the hikes appear steeper than usual, especially on popular long-distance routes.

Why Prices Are Rising

“I thought staying in Bengaluru with the LPG crisis and all prices shooting up will make my Ugadi expensive. So, I decided to go home. Now, looking at the bus ticket prices for my hometown near Belagavi, I rather stay back in my PG instead of spending entire month’s budget on just the bus fare" said Kruthika Kalyani, a post graduate student to News18.

The reason behind the hike is largely driven by demand. During festival periods, the number of people travelling out of Bengaluru rises sharply. At the same time, the number of available buses does not increase in proportion. This gap allows operators to raise ticket prices.

Bus operators argue that rising operational costs also play a role. Expenses such as fuel, maintenance, and insurance have gone up. According to them, peak travel seasons help offset losses from quieter months. However, for passengers, the timing of these hikes feels harsh, as many have little choice but to travel during festivals.

How Much More You Are Paying

Here is a comparison of regular fares versus current festive prices on key routes from Bengaluru:

RouteNormal Price (Rs)Festival Price (Rs)
Bengaluru – Mangaluru650 – 13001200 – 4500
Bengaluru – Hubballi475 – 11001200 – 4200
Bengaluru – Belagavi389 – 12001129 – 5500
Bengaluru – Davanagere450 – 1300750 – 5500
Bengaluru – Kalaburagi750 – 10001200 – 2200
Bengaluru – Hassan463 – 1000750 – 1600
Bengaluru – Shivamogga500 – 9901199 – 1800

On several routes, fares that usually stay under Rs 1000 have now climbed to Rs 4000 or even Rs 5500. For budget travellers, this kind of increase makes a big difference.

Passengers Left With Few Options

Travellers say they feel cornered. Train tickets are often sold out days in advance. Government buses get booked quickly as well. Flights are priced even higher during the festive rush. This leaves private buses as the only realistic option for many.

Some passengers are now planning their trips much earlier to avoid last-minute price spikes. Others are cutting down on travel or postponing visits altogether. For daily wage earners and middle-class families, these hikes can disrupt plans entirely.

The pattern repeats every year during major festivals like Ugadi, Diwali, and Sankranti. Ticket prices surge, complaints rise, and yet the situation remains largely unchanged. Regulatory action, if any, often comes late, after most tickets have already been sold at higher rates.

What Travellers Can Do

For now, the best way to manage costs is to plan smartly. Booking tickets in advance can help avoid peak pricing. Comparing fares across different platforms and checking government bus services first may also offer some relief.

Because once the festive rush begins, prices do not stay still. They climb quickly, leaving travellers with fewer options.
