Travis Turner’s case has now raised bigger questions than just his disappearance. The former Union High School football coach in Virginia went missing in November 2025, just after serious charges were filed against him.

But as people look deeper, they are not just talking about one man anymore. They are pointing at a pattern. The Wise County Public Schools district, where Turner worked, has seen multiple cases in recent years where staff members were accused of inappropriate behavior involving students. For many parents, this is no longer being seen as a one-time issue. It feels like something deeper is wrong inside the system.

Wise County Public Schools faces scrutiny as Travis Turner case adds to past charges against Tyler Jay Tibbs, Timothy Lee Meador, and Dalton Matthew Bates

The concern grew stronger when parents started listing earlier cases from the same district.

Before Travis Turner, at least three other staff members had already faced serious charges. In August 2025, Coeburn Middle School teacher Tyler Jay Tibbs was charged with three counts of carnal knowledge and taking indecent liberties with a child. These charges usually involve minors between 13 and 15 years old. According to WCYB, Tibbs, who is 28, was released on a $25,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on April 29.

Then there is the case of Timothy Lee Meador. In 2023, the Union coach pleaded guilty to child solicitation and indecent liberties. He spent one year in prison.Going further back, in 2020, Dalton Matthew Bates, who worked as a band leader at LF Addington Middle School and Union High School, faced 20 counts related to child pornography. He later pleaded guilty to 10 counts. He received 36 months for each count, but the sentences ran at the same time, and he was released after being given credit for time already served. Now, with Travis Turner, the situation has become even more serious. He was charged with five counts of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor. Soon after these charges, on November 20, 2025, he walked into the woods behind his house and has not been seen since.Parents are not staying quiet anymore. During a Wise County school board meeting in January, one parent, Stephen Murray, shared his concern.

As reported by the New York Post, he said, “When there is this much abuse, it’s not just a few bad apples. It is a culture. The fish rots from the head down.”He also added, “This is just the cases that have been reported and charged.”Murray later spoke to the Daily Mail and said he does not believe Turner is dead. He said, “Everyone knows that he’s alive. No one believes that he took his own life, and the reason is because he’s too much of a coward and he thinks too highly of himself to take his own life.”He continued, “People [think] he liked himself too much. There’s no way that this brought him to suicide. They think he ran for it.”As the search for Turner continues, many families are now asking for clear answers and stronger action from the district.
