KOLKATA: A businessman has been conned into handing over his gold jewellery-two rings and a chain, worth Rs 6 lakh-to a woman who befriended him at a bar-cum-restaurant on EM Bypass.
The 54-year-old man was at the restaurant on July 9, when two women struck up a conversation with him. One of the women reportedly exchanged contacts and two days later, she urged the man to meet her, citing personal problems.
Despite initial hesitation, the businessman asked the woman to meet at a friend's place in Salt Lake, where she asked for monetary help for her parents' treatment. When the businessman said he would not be able to help out with money, she allegedly persuaded him to hand over his gold chain and rings, weighing around 100 g. The woman reportedly promised to return the ornaments in two days but ever since, she disappeared, prompting the man to lodge a complaint. "We are checking CCTV footage to identify the suspects," said a senior police officer.
