Star Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold’s reaction to his teammate Brahim Diaz missing a penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations final has gone viral on social media. The former walked away from his chair after Diaz had his effort saved deep into injury time.

Morocco seemed poised to snatch the AFCON 2025 title when a penalty was awarded deep in stoppage time for a foul on Diaz. Defender El Hadji Malick was judged to have pulled him inside the box during a Moroccan corner, prompting the referee to consult the monitor.

The VAR review came after Senegal had a goal ruled out, with Abdoulaye Seck adjudged to have made contact with Achraf Hakimi’s hand while challenging for the ball during the corner.

The Lions erupted in anger at the decision, prompting head coach Pape Thiaw to order his players off the field. The game was halted for about 10 minutes before Sadio Mané, who remained on the field, went into the dressing room to bring the footballers back and resume the match.

The Senegal players complied and returned to the field for the penalty. Watching it all unfold on El Chiringuito, Alexander-Arnold was so stunned by the saved spot-kick that he left the livestream.

The penalty save marked the end of regular time, sending the game into extra time. Just four minutes in, Papa Gueye struck a brilliant long-range goal past Yassine Bounou, bagging Senegal’s AFCON 2025 win.

A record 121 goals were scored at the 2025 AFCON, two more than in the previous edition in the Ivory Coast. Diaz won the Golden Boot with five goals.

Morocco coach Walid Regragui called Diaz the ‘X factor’ in his team. “He can become the best player in the world if he wants to," the former had said.
