Trichy: Aimed at enhancing security and protecting its assets, Trichy international airport commissioned advanced hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) systems comprising crash-rated electro-hydraulic road blockers and tyre killers at the new integrated terminal building on Monday.Established at ₹72.2 lakh, the systems were designed to prevent unauthorised vehicle access and counter security threats. Unlike conventional boom barriers or bollards, the crash-rated road blocker provides full-width protection using reinforced steel with anti-ram capability for 210m of the approach road near the toll booth. Similarly, the electro-hydraulic tyre killer installed on the exit approach road for 190m from the booth serves as an additional layer of protection and prevents wrong-way vehicle entry.
During a security breach, hardened steel spikes automatically rise to puncture tyres.Installed below the road surface, both systems remain concealed below the roadway during normal operations. When activated by security personnel, they will rise within seconds.“The advanced systems significantly strengthen our capability to protect passengers, airport personnel and critical assets against vehicle-based threats while ensuring seamless movement of authorised traffic. The systems will be handed over to the city police for operational deployment,” airport director G Gopalakrishnan said.
