West Bengal Police on Saturday arrested Sarina Bibi, the wife of TMC strongman Jahangir Khan from Falta, in connection with the attack on police personnel and central forces.

The 37-year-old was taken into custody two days after violence erupted outside the Falta police station, and an attempt was allegedly made to secure the release of her husband.

According to reports, 27 people have been arrested so far in connection with the unrest at the police station. Sarina Bibi is alleged to have led the protest demanding the release of Jahangir Khan, who has been in custody since June 8. He was apprehended near the Nepal border while allegedly attempting to flee the country.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had directed that a case be registered against Khan’s wife over allegations of anti-state activities linked to the protests and the attack on police personnel.

During a recent public meeting in Falta, the Chief Minister warned of stringent action against those involved, including the possibility of confiscation of property, and stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Police sources claimed that Sarina Bibi orchestrated the attack on the police station after expressing anger over the public parading of her husband with a rope tied around his waist. Since his arrest, Jahangir Khan has reportedly been paraded through the streets of Falta on several occasions.

Known to be an aide of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Jahangir Khan built a strong presence in Falta, which is part of Banerjee’s Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.

He came into the national spotlight after a public confrontation with IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma during the Assembly elections. Polling in Falta was cancelled in the second phase amid allegations of large-scale irregularities, with Jahangir Khan contesting as the Trinamool Congress candidate.

In a dramatic development, Khan, who had projected himself as the local ‘Pushpa’ after the Telugu action film, withdrew from the race ahead of the repoll. The BJP subsequently won the constituency by a record margin. Enforcement agencies had been monitoring him over allegations relating to threats and attempts at election fraud.
