US President Donald Trump has once again taken a dig at London Mayor Sadiq Khan during his visit to Scotland on Monday, July 28. Trump described Khan as “a nasty person" and claimed he has done a “terrible job" running London. His comments came in the presence of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who later defended Khan, calling him “a friend".

The remarks were made during a press conference held alongside Prime Minister Starmer at Trump’s golf resort in Turnberry, South Ayrshire. The US President, currently on a four-day informal summer visit to the UK, reignited his long-standing feud with the London Mayor when asked whether he planned to visit the capital during his upcoming state visit.

“I’m not a fan of your mayor. I think he’s done a terrible job … a nasty person. But I would certainly visit London, yeah," Trump replied. His comments appeared to surprise Starmer, who was seated beside him. The Prime Minister quickly interjected, saying, “He’s a friend of mine, actually."

Sadiq Khan, a senior Labour figure and two-term Mayor of London, later responded to the US President’s remarks. In a statement, Khan said he was pleased to welcome Trump to “the greatest city in the world". He added that the President would witness London’s strength through its diversity and inclusivity. “Perhaps these are the reasons why a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship under his presidency," he added pointedly.

The animosity between Trump and Khan dates back several years. During Trump’s first term in office, he criticised Khan’s response to the 2017 London Bridge attack and even challenged him to take an IQ test. In June 2019, just ahead of a state visit to the UK, Trump publicly attacked Khan on social media, labelling him a “stone cold loser" and accusing him of failing to tackle crime in the capital. He further referred to Khan as “dumb" and “incompetent".

Khan has not held back in his own criticism, once describing Trump as “a poster boy for racists". According to The Independent, Khan also said on the High Performance podcast that Trump targeted him because of his skin colour and Muslim faith.

Meanwhile, President Trump has accepted a formal invitation from King Charles III for an unprecedented second state visit to the UK. He will be accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump. The visit is scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 September at Windsor Castle.
