US President Donald Trump, aged 79, has been diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) following a medical checkup prompted by swelling and injury in his legs. The White House released a statement confirming the diagnosis after routine medical examinations.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a condition where leg veins fail to transport blood effectively back to the heart. Under normal circumstances, veins contain small valves that ensure blood flows towards the heart. When these valves are damaged or weakened, blood can flow backward and accumulate in the legs, leading to increased pressure in leg veins, swelling, and the formation of ulcers. While not life-threatening, CVI can be quite painful.

How Did Donald Trump Contract This Disease?

The White House attributed President Trump’s condition to his frequent habit of shaking hands and the use of aspirin, which he takes to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a slow, chronic vein problem associated with ageing and certain habits, commonly affecting individuals over the age of 70.

What Are The Symptoms And What Causes Them?

The initial symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) include swelling in the legs or ankles, a feeling of heaviness or fatigue, itching or tingling of the skin, and the appearance of varicose veins. In some cases, the skin may darken, thicken, or take on a leathery texture, and ulcers or wounds may develop on the legs. If left untreated, the condition can become increasingly painful and severe.

CVI typically occurs when the valves in the veins become damaged, often due to previous blood clots or injury. As people age, their veins naturally weaken, increasing the risk. Other contributing factors include prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy, genetic predisposition, smoking, low physical activity, and a family history of vein problems.

How Is CVI Treated?

Although CVI cannot be completely cured, its symptoms can be managed. Lifestyle changes such as regular walking, elevating the legs, and maintaining a healthy weight can help control the disease. Wearing compression stockings can normalise blood flow by applying pressure on the veins. Medications like antibiotics, blood thinners, and medicated wraps are also used for treatment. Procedures such as sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation, and vein surgery are considered depending on the patient’s condition.
