Amid US President Donald Trump’s tall talks and bravado on the Israel-Iran war, he is grappling with his own fears of Jimmy Carter-like failure, according to the Wall Street Journal.
What are Trump’s fears? Why did Jimmy Carter fail with regard to Iran? What happened in 1979? News18 explains.
HOW TRUMP IS HANDLING IRAN CRISIS: WHAT THE WSJ REPORT SAID
While Trump publicly projects a “maximalist" and “belligerent" persona, top aides describe a leader haunted by the potential for a catastrophic failure, according to the report.
Behind the scenes, Trump is reportedly “grappling" with how quickly the conflict could spiral out of control. Trump is frequently ruminating on Jimmy Carter’s 1979 Iran hostage crisis, fearing a similar international policy failure that could define his legacy.
Heightened security at Mar-a-Lago, including unusual drone visibility countermeasures (keeping umbrellas open on the patio at night), reflects an increased sense of personal and national vulnerability, said the report.
While he publicly claims the U.S. is near victory, the downing of American warplanes and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have caused him significant internal stress, it said.
Trump’s contradictory messaging
The report highlighted how Trump’s decision-making has become increasingly improvisational, often bypassing his national security team.
Trump issued a 12-hour ultimatum to Iran via social media that was not part of any formal military plan. He veers between threatening to strike civilian infrastructure (like power plants) and suddenly announcing a precarious two-week cease-fire.
Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and others have unsuccessfully urged him to stick to scripted addresses to reassure the public that a cohesive plan exists, said the WSJ report.
Trump’s political and global pressures
The internal struggle is exacerbated by external failures to secure a quick “deal". Trump has lashed out at European allies for refusing to join the US campaign, leading to further isolation.
With gas prices averaging over $4.00, aides worry the war is eroding the “America First" economic stability that fueled his 2024 victory. His bellicose rhetoric led to a rare public feud with Pope Leo XIV, who called for peace and condemned the use of religion to justify war, alienating some of Trump’s Catholic base, said the report.
WHAT WAS THE 1979 IRAN CRISIS INVOLVING JIMMY CARTER?
The 1979 Iran hostage crisis was a 444-day diplomatic standoff that began when Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 66 Americans hostage. The crisis was a defining and ultimately damaging event for President
Jimmy Carter’s administration, contributing significantly to his loss in the 1980 election.
Iran crisis: What had happened in 1979?
In early 1979, Iran’s pro-Western Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown by an Islamic revolution led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Tensions peaked in October 1979 when President Carter allowed the exiled, cancer-stricken Shah to enter the United States for medical care.
Iranian revolutionaries viewed the US admission of the Shah as a sign of continued American meddling and feared another US-backed coup.
November 4, 1979: Militant students occupied the embassy, initially demanding the Shah’s return to Iran for trial. Shortly after the takeover, 13 hostages (women and African Americans) were released, and one more was freed in July 1980 due to illness, leaving 52 remaining in captivity.
January 1980: Six American diplomats who had avoided capture were smuggled out of Iran by the Canadian government and the CIA.
April 24, 1980: Carter authorized a secret military rescue mission, Operation Eagle Claw, that ended in disaster when a helicopter collided with a transport plane in the Iranian desert, killing eight U.S. servicemen.
Late 1980: In late 1980, negotiations mediated by Algeria led to an agreement, the Algiers Accords, to release the hostages in exchange for the unfreezing of Iranian assets.
How did it impact Jimmy Carter?
The crisis made the Carter administration appear weak to many voters. Constant media coverage, including the creation of ABC’s Nightline, kept the “days in captivity" count at the forefront of the American psyche.
The standoff led to a total severance of US-Iran diplomatic relations on April 7, 1980, which remain broken today.
In a final act of defiance against Carter, the Iranian government waited until minutes after Ronald Reagan was inaugurated on January 20, 1981, to officially release the remaining 52 hostages.
Following their release, the hostages were flown to Germany, where Carter, as a private citizen, personally greeted them. The failed rescue attempt also led to a massive overhaul of the US military, eventually resulting in the creation of the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to ensure better inter-service coordination in future crises.
KEY FAQs

It refers to Jimmy Carter’s failed 1980 hostage rescue mission in Iran, which ended disastrously and hurt his presidency and re-election chances.
Why is Donald Trump compared to that?
Reports say he fears a similar outcome — military setbacks, casualties, or humiliation—that could damage his image and political standing, even as he projects public confidence.
What’s the “anxiety behind the bravado"?
Despite tough rhetoric, analysts note concerns about rising casualties, economic fallout (like oil shocks), and lack of clear victory — factors that could turn the war into a political liability.
