US President Donald Trump is likely to attend the second round of peace talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials.

The latest round of talks is scheduled to be held on Thursday in Washington. It was previously supposed to held in the State Department but later moved to White House, Al Arabiya quoted sources.

The first round of talks was held earlier this month. Israel and Lebanon held their first diplomatic talks in over three decades. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who mediated, said it was a “historic opportunity" to end Hezbollah’s influence. Following this, a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon to pause fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah was declared by President Trump on April 16.

Despite the ceasefire, Iran strikes killed at least six people and injured several in southern Lebanon. However, Israel rejected the claims. A Lebanese journalist was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in southern Lebanon where she had taken shelter while reporting on the conflict, the Associated Press (AP) reported on Wednesday.

According to AP, Amal Khalil, a reporter with the daily Al-Akhbar, was killed in the strike in the village of al-Tiri. She had taken cover in the house after an earlier airstrike landed near the vehicle she was travelling in with a colleague while covering the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. The conflict has led to over 2,300 deaths and displaced more than one million people in Lebanon since early March.

According to CNN, Lebanon plans to seek a one-month ceasefire extension in its ambassador-level talks with Israel. However, the US-led ceasefire plan stated that Israel would “preserve its right to take all necessary measures in self-defense" and called on the Lebanese government to prevent Hezbollah “from carrying out attacks, operations or hostile activities against Israeli targets."

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the country has no “serious disagreements with Lebanon" and is willing to “extend a hand in peace" to all those who seek it.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said

Lebanon has urged the Trump administration to pressure Israel to scale back its demands and end its military invasion of the country.
