US President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that American military operations against Iran have resumed, while announcing that he will deliver a televised address to the nation on Thursday amid a fresh escalation in hostilities.

Trump informed lawmakers that US forces carried out “defensive strikes" on July 7. The notification comes after Washington renewed strikes on Iranian military targets and restored a naval blockade targeting Iran.

The move has reignited a long-running dispute with Congress, where lawmakers argue that the president requires approval to continue military action beyond the limits set under existing war powers rules.

Trump Restarts Iran Operations

According to The New York Times, Trump’s notification effectively starts a new 60-day period during which his administration can continue using military force in the region without additional congressional authorisation.

The War Powers Resolution of 1973 requires the president to inform Congress within 48 hours of deploying US forces into hostilities or situations where military action is imminent. The notification meets the reporting requirement but does not itself grant approval for the use of force, leaving Congress with its constitutional oversight role.

The administration said the renewed military actions followed Iran’s continued attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as strikes targeting US interests and regional partners.

The announcement comes amid wider tensions in the region, with Washington also moving to reinstate a naval blockade of Iran and impose a 20% charge on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump Announces Address To Nation

Trump also said he will deliver a “Speech to the Nation" on Thursday evening, though he has not revealed the subject of the address.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would speak at 9 pm Eastern Time. The White House has not provided further details about the planned speech.

The address comes as fighting with Iran intensifies.

Trump’s last major televised address on the conflict came on April 1, when he defended the US military campaign against Iran, more than a month after the US-Israeli operation began.
