US President Donald Trump said he had cancelled planned military strikes against Iran after negotiations were approved at the highest levels of the Iranian leadership, claiming that the final details of a potential agreement had been agreed “in both concept and great detail" by multiple countries involved in the talks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran had been called off and suggested a signing ceremony for the agreement could be announced soon. He listed the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt among those involved in the discussions.
What Did Trump Say About Naval Blockade?
Despite announcing a halt to planned military action, Trump stressed that pressure on Tehran would continue.
“The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized," he wrote, indicating that the measure will stay in place until a final agreement is signed.
The US President has repeatedly described the blockade as a key source of leverage over Iran and has previously said it would remain in force until any agreement with Tehran is completed.
What Is US Naval Blockade?
The naval blockade is a US-led operation aimed at preventing Iran from freely exporting oil and conducting maritime trade through its ports. Under the operation, US forces monitor shipping activity around Iranian ports and track vessels leaving the country. Ships suspected of carrying Iranian exports can be intercepted after entering international waters, limiting Tehran’s ability to earn revenue from oil sales.
The blockade applies specifically to vessels entering or departing Iranian ports rather than to commercial traffic passing through the wider region. Trump has previously stated that while the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international shipping, restrictions targeting Iranian maritime trade would stay in place.
Why Was US Blockade Introduced?
The blockade was launched on April 13 after tensions escalated over access to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping corridors. The waterway connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and carries roughly 20% of global oil and natural gas shipments. Washington said the measure was intended to counter Iranian restrictions on maritime traffic through the strait and to prevent Tehran from using control of the route as political and economic leverage.
How Long Could US Blockade Remain In Place?
Trump did not provide a timetable for lifting the blockade, saying only that it would remain in force until the proposed agreement is formally finalised and signed.
