US President Donald Trump has said negotiations with Iran are “very close" to producing an agreement, but stressed that one of the remaining issues is ensuring Tehran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon through any means, including purchasing or acquiring one.

Speaking in an interview with NBC aired on Sunday, Trump claimed Iran had already accepted that it would not possess nuclear weapons. However, he said he wanted stronger language in the proposed agreement to prevent Tehran from obtaining such weapons from outside sources.

Trump pushes broader nuclear restrictions

Asked about the status of the talks, Trump said only a few issues remained unresolved. “I think we’re very close. We have a couple of points. They don’t even seem like big points," he said. “They’ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons."

Trump explained that an earlier draft of the agreement focused on preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. However, he argued that the deal should also explicitly ban Iran from buying, purchasing or acquiring them.

“We had a clause in there that they will not develop nuclear weapons," Trump said. “I said what happens if they don’t develop but they go out and purchase or acquire?"

He further added, “I want to put the word if they buy, purchase or acquire, and they’ve got to have that in there too because that’s not developing. So they don’t have the right to develop or purchase, acquire or buy."
