US President Donald Trump is set to cap America’s year-long 250th Independence anniversary celebrations on Saturday with what he has called “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all", placing himself at the centre of commemorations that have drawn criticism for becoming increasingly political.

The event on the National Mall in Washington comes after weeks of celebrations organised under the Trump administration-backed Freedom 250 initiative, which has largely eclipsed the bipartisan body originally created to oversee the semiquincentennial. While supporters have hailed the festivities as a celebration of American patriotism, critics argue they have blurred the line between a national commemoration and partisan politics.

Across the United States, millions of Americans are expected to celebrate Independence Day with parades, concerts and fireworks. Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, is hosting free public events, including concerts and community celebrations, while New York’s festivities feature tall ships from around the world and its annual fireworks display.

Trump’s evening address on the National Mall will be accompanied by military flyovers and an expanded fireworks display. Visitors to the capital are also contending with heightened security, possible thunderstorms and temperatures forecast to exceed 38 degrees Celsius.

Freedom 250 events under spotlight

The National Mall has been transformed into a sprawling “Great American State Fair", complete with a Ferris wheel, military displays and exhibits by conservative organisations and defence contractors.

Other Freedom 250-branded events include a faith gathering featuring largely conservative Christian speakers and sporting events, while Trump has also floated plans for a mixed martial arts event on the White House grounds next year.

Critics have also questioned Freedom 250’s travelling “Freedom Trucks", arguing that they present an overly religious interpretation of American history while giving limited attention to slavery, racial injustice and other contentious chapters of the nation’s past.

Several Democratic-led states declined to send official delegations, while a number of performers reportedly withdrew from anniversary events over concerns that the celebrations had become increasingly partisan.

The celebrations have also attracted far-right groups. Members of the white nationalist organisation Patriot Front were seen arriving in Washington on Saturday.

What Americans are saying

Public opinion reflects the political divide surrounding the anniversary.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that a majority of Americans believe the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations have become too political, including roughly three-quarters of Democrats and about half of Republicans.

Ahead of the celebrations, the Trump administration also undertook a series of refurbishment projects across Washington. While several monuments, statues and fountains have been restored, a much-publicised renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool has faced criticism over unfinished work and maintenance issues.
