US President Donald Trump celebrated CBS’s decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, using his Truth Social platform to mock the comedian and suggest that other late-night hosts could also be fired soon. Despite recent controversies, The Late Show is one of the top-rated programs in late-night television. Stephen Colbert, known for his satirical takes on Donald Trump, has long been a target of the US President’s disdain.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show," Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform.

This comes as CBS announced that ‘The Late Show’ would go off-air in May 2026, ending a 33-year run that spanned from David Letterman’s iconic tenure to Stephen Colbert’s more politically-charged version since 2015. The network has not named a replacement, with Stephen Colbert telling audiences, “It’s not just the end of the show, it is the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced, this is all just going away."

The decision comes just days after Stephen Colbert criticized CBS’s parent company, Paramount, for settling a $16 million lawsuit with Donald Trump over a Kamala Harris interview aired during her 2020 campaign. Stephen Colbert described the deal as “a big fat bribe"- a comment that drew fresh attention as Paramount seeks regulatory approval for an $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media.
