US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran has officially collapsed. Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump warned of immediate escalation, stating that the U.S. could launch deeper military strikes, reinstate a strict naval blockade, and potentially seize Kharg Island—the primary backbone of Iran’s petroleum export empire.
“To me, I think it’s over," Trump told reporters when asked about the state of the truce. The latest multi-day pause in fighting had been loosely observed during the funeral period for Iran’s late Supreme Leader, but unravelled rapidly following a fresh chain of maritime attacks.
Why Seizing Kharg Island Matters For US
The potential seizure or long-term disruption of Kharg Island represents an economic nuclear option in the conflict. Measuring just eight square miles and located roughly 25 kilometers off Iran’s southwestern coast, the tiny island is the single most vital node in the country’s economic survival.
The location is uniquely irreplaceable due to its geographical advantages. Much of Iran’s mainland coastline features shallow waters that prevent the loading of heavy shipping containers. In contrast, Kharg Island features natural deep-water facilities engineered to accommodate Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), or supertankers. Major pipelines transport crude from Iran’s interior oil fields directly to the island for storage and international shipment.
Because roughly half of Iran’s government revenue relies strictly on oil and gas, any prolonged capture or structural neutralization of Kharg Island would effectively freeze the nation’s ability to trade on global markets.
Escalation Risks in the Global Chokehold
Trump’s renewed threats of an exclusive naval blockade have instantly reignited severe volatility in the global energy sector, sending Brent crude prices climbing over 5% on Wednesday afternoon.
Security experts warn that a localized invasion or blockade of Kharg Island presents severe logistical vulnerabilities for Western forces. Because the island rests deep inside the Persian Gulf and sits directly beneath Iran’s heavily fortified, mountainous mainland coast, US troops holding the area would be highly exposed to short-range missile barrages, drone swarms, and hidden naval mines deployed by local Iranian maritime groups.
