US President Donald Trump has opposed more strikes on Iranian energy sites after an Israeli attack on the vital South Pars gas field on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.

According to the officials, Trump knew about the Israeli strike on South Pars in advance and supported the attack as a message to the Iranian regime over its decision to block the Strait of Hormuz. However, he believes Iran got the message and is now against attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure, as per the report.

However, officials told WSJ that Trump could once again be open to targeting more Iranian energy facilities if Tehran continues to block the strategic waterway, which carries 20% of the world’s crude oil and gas shipments.

The Israeli Air Force struck a natural gas processing facility in Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, multiple facilities at the South Pars gas field were hit. Emergency response teams were deployed to the site and were working to extinguish fires triggered by the attack.

Citing sources, The Times of Israel reported that the attacks carried out by Israel were coordinated with the US. The source said the US was aware of the attack, but did not take part in it. A report by Axios also said Israel’s strike was coordinated with and approved by the Trump administration.

The development follows earlier tensions between Washington and Israel over targeting energy infrastructure. The Trump administration had previously objected to Israeli strikes on oil depots in Tehran and had asked that such actions not be carried out without US approval, as per reports.

South Pars is Iran’s biggest source of domestic energy supplies and is shared by both Iran and Qatar. Iran warned of “uncontrolled consequences" after the Israeli strike and vowed to destroy the energy industry of the Gulf region if attacked again.

Iran also carried out an attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, which houses the world’s largest LNG production facility, leading to fires and extensive damage. Qatar condemned the strikes as a “flagrant violation of the state’s sovereignty, as well as a direct threat to its national security."
