China strongly objects to a potential phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te because Beijing views any direct, high-level diplomatic contact as a severe violation of its sovereignty and a validation of Taiwanese independence.

Following Trump’s public statements that he intends to speak directly with President Lai, China’s Foreign Ministry warned the United States to handle the matter with “extreme caution" and to stop sending the “wrong signals to separatist forces". News18 explains.

The 4 Reasons

The primary reasons China reacts with intense hostility to direct communications between U.S. and Taiwanese leadership are:

Violation of the “One China" Principle: Beijing considers Taiwan an inalienable province of China with no right to conduct independent foreign relations or claim statehood. It treats the Taiwan issue as its “core of core interests" and a non-negotiable diplomatic boundary. Because China does not recognise Taiwan’s government, a direct call from a sitting U.S. president elevates Taiwan’s international standing, treating its democratically elected leader as a legitimate head of state. Beijing even refuses to refer to Lai as “president," calling him a “separatist" instead.

Shattering Decades of Diplomatic Protocol: When the U.S. formally shifted its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979, it committed to maintaining only unofficial, cultural, and economic ties with Taiwan. A direct presidential call shatters over four decades of carefully managed diplomatic protocol. While Trump held a similar 10-minute congratulatory call with then-President Tsai Ing-wen in late 2016 as President-elect, a call while actively serving as a sitting president carries far more official weight and represents a much more provocative policy shift.

Deep Distrust of President Lai Ching-te: Beijing holds a deeply hostile view of President Lai Ching-te, viewing him as a dangerous independence hardliner. China fears that high-level backing from Washington will embolden Lai’s administration to push the boundaries of independence, which Trump himself publicly noted he wishes to discourage.

Overlapping Tensions Regarding Massive Weapons Packages: The potential phone call arrives at a highly sensitive time, as the Trump administration navigates multi-billion dollar weapons agreements with Taipei—including a $11 billion arms transfer approved in December 2025 and a pending $14 billion weapons package. China fiercely opposes these arms sales. Trump has explicitly referred to these defensive packages as a “very good negotiating chip" in his wider trade and geopolitical dealings with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Beijing views a phone call as an attempt by Washington to increase its leverage.

What are the potential consequences?

When high-level U.S. officials engage directly with Taiwan, Beijing routinely retaliates through aggressive military posturing.

For instance, China launched historic, massive live-fire war games encircling the island following then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei in 2022.

Regional analysts warn that a formal Trump-Lai call could provoke an even larger display of military force, including extensive naval blockades or airspace incursions in the Taiwan Strait.
