Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna on Tuesday apologised for his remarks about actor Rajinikanth, in which he claimed that the latter had dropped his political plans due to DMK’s threats.
His apology came hours after the actor dismissed the claim by the TVK leader as baseless. His remarks had triggered a controversy, which soon escalated into a social media clash between DMK and TVK supporters. Several political leaders and other personalities criticised Arjuna for his remarks.
Amid backlash, he addressed a public meeting in Kolathur and clarified that his earlier comments were meant to point to what he described as the DMK’s political tactics, not to imply that Rajinikanth had been directly threatened. Acknowledging that his words may have been misinterpreted, he said he did not intend to offend the senior actor and offered an apology.
Aadhav said he intended to “record what I see as the DMK’s strategy" and not to insult the actor. “From his statement, I understand that he may have been hurt… If you are upset, I sincerely apologise," he said, adding that Rajinikanth was older than him, TOI repoorted.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Rajinikanth responded to the claims, calling them untrue. “Mr Aadhav Arjuna, who holds a leadership position in the TVK, recently made a statement about me that was contrary to the truth," he stated.
In a post on X, Rajinikanth also thanked several political figures and members of the film industry, as well as his supporters, for standing by him. Among those who voiced support were AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, DMK minister S Regupathy, BJP leaders Nainar Nagenthran and L Murugan.
The actor concluded his message with a cryptic remark that read: “Time will not speak, but it will wait and respond," which drew varied interpretations, with some viewing it as a statement of patience and others seeing it as a subtle warning.
