Twisha case SC hearing on Monday: “Accused can be taken into custody only for limited period. If that period is not utilised by CBI, it might impact probe," Navnidhi Sharma said

Following the incident, Twisha’s body was sent for post-mortem examination at AIIMS Bhopal. However, her parents have refused to accept the initial findings and are demanding an impartial, high-level investigation. Police have registered a case on suspicion of dowry harassment and murder. Meanwhile, Samarth Singh has reportedly been absconding since the incident. Bhopal Police teams are conducting raids at multiple locations in an attempt to trace him.

Two days after the Madhya Pradesh (MP) government recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Twisha Sharma death case, the central agency is yet to take over.

Agency officials said that the process is still underway.

Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has expressed concern over the delay. Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Sharma said that the delay might impact the quest for justice. “As per the law, the accused can be taken into custody only for a limited period. If that period is not utilised fully by the CBI, it might impact the overall probe," Sharma told CNN-News18.

Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, was arrested by Bhopal police on Friday after he attempted to surrender in Jabalpur court. On Saturday, he was sent to seven days’ police remand.

Sources told CNN-News18 that although the MP government has written to the DOPT for a CBI probe, no communication has happened between the Chief Secretary or DGP of MP with CBI, as is the usual norm in the handover of such cases.

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and is expected to hear it on Monday. Twisha’s family expressed hope that a CBI team could be constituted after the hearing.

The motive

The CBI investigation is likely to focus on the trigger which led to Twisha’s death. Police Commissioner of Bhopal has said her death was by hanging, a finding Twisha’s family counters. The WhatsApp messages shared by Twisha with her mother, her Instagram chat with a friend, her visit to a beauty parlour and to doctors for medical termination of pregnancy are all crucial evidence which could reveal the trigger that led to the death.

Second post-mortem

Amid the delay in the CBI probe, Twisha’s second post-mortem is being carried out at AIIMS Bhopal.

A team of forensic doctors from AIIMS Delhi was flown in by the MP government via chartered flight. The second post-mortem began around 11 am.

“We have been assured of an unbiased and scientific autopsy by the new team," Twisha’s father said. “There were injuries on her arms, her eyes and lips. The ligature marks, height, everything was mismatched. We want a post-mortem report which accounts for all these doubts," Navnidhi Sharma said.

Cremation likely today

The family will take a call on the last rites of Twisha after the post-mortem.

Twisha died on May 12 and the body has been in AIIMS Bhopal mortuary since then.

Harshit, Twisha’s brother, said, “We have decided to do the cremation today after the post-mortem. If the process is completed early, cremation will happen at 5pm."
