A four-member team of senior doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has arrived in Bhopal to conduct a second post-mortem examination of Twisha Sharma, following directions from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The High Court had ordered a fresh autopsy to be carried out by a specialised team from AIIMS Delhi. Acting on this directive, the medical team departed earlier in the day with advanced equipment and reached Bhopal to undertake the procedure.

In a parallel development, the Supreme Court on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the case. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is expected to consider the matter on Monday. The apex court has registered the issue as a suo motu case titled, “In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepencies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Woman at Matrimonial Home".

Meanwhile, a local court in Bhopal has remanded Twisha’s husband and prime accused, Samarth Singh, to seven days of police custody. The judicial order, effective from May 23 to May 29, was issued to enable further interrogation into the circumstances leading to her death. The decision came after Singh was formally produced before the magistrate on Saturday, following his medical examination.

Singh’s counsel opposed the police remand and stated that they intend to apply for bail after the completion of the seven-day custody period.

Earlier, a medical board was constituted to carry out the second post-mortem on Sunday. This step was initiated after a Bhopal court authorised the Director of AIIMS Delhi to oversee the procedure, acting on a formal request from the Madhya Pradesh government. The AIIMS team, equipped with the latest instruments, travelled to Bhopal specifically for this purpose.

Samarth Singh had been absconding before being taken into custody from Jabalpur on May 22. The investigation has widened beyond him, with three formal notices served to his mother, former judge Giribala Singh.

The Madhya Pradesh government has already recommended that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), reflecting the growing demand for an independent probe.

Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, married Bhopal-based Samarth Singh in December 2025. She died on May 12, after which her family alleged that she had been subjected to mental torture and dowry harassment by her husband and his family. The allegations have sparked widespread outrage and demands for a thorough and transparent investigation.

As the local police continue their interrogation during the initial custody period, Twisha’s family has reiterated their call for a “fair investigation" by the CBI, underscoring their lack of confidence in the local probe and their quest for justice for their daughter.
