Woman cried ‘rape’ on Gorakhpur Express after sex with boyfriend, says GRP; CCTV footage exposes truth

MUMBAI: After a 30-year-old woman told hospital authorities that she had been "sexually assaulted in a moving train", the Govt Railway Police (GRP) swung into action and registered an FIR.

A thorough investigation, though, revealed her story was made up. The GRP will now begin the process to close the case.On July 13, Dadar GRP received an intimation from a public hospital about a woman being admitted with some wounds to her private parts. On being quizzed by the police, the woman said she had travelled from Prayagraj to Mumbai by Gorakhpur Express in the general coach a day earlier. She added while she was using the washroom on the train, an unknown man got inside and latched the door before sexually assaulting her.

The incident was serious but the woman said she did not wish to file formal charges as it would bring her disrepute. Police tried to convince her and roped in members of an NGO to counsel her. Eventually, the police recorded an FIR suo motu when she refused to lodge a complaint.Teams of police officials checked CCTV footage from various stations and revisited locations she had mentioned. A thorough probe revealed she had travelled to Mumbai with her boyfriend and they checked into a guest house where they got intimate on July 12.

She suffered wounds to her private parts and was hospitalised. But police said she did not disclose the facts to protect the identity of her boyfriend. After treatment, she left for her hometown. Police said they spoke to her before concluding the complaint was false.(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
