New Delhi: In one of the fastest convictions in a street crime case in the capital, two men accused of snatching a phone were convicted by a Delhi court just 24 days after the FIR was registered.Of the two, Parveen (23) is a habitual offender with involvement in nine criminal cases, including theft, house theft and offences under the Arms Act. The other convict is Rahul (22).Deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Akanksha Yadav said the case stems from a snatching reported on June 13. Following the complaint, a case was registered. The investigation was assigned the same day to head constable Harendra Giri.The complainant, Pintu, a resident of Shakurpur village, told police that the snatching happened around noon when he was returning to his rented room for lunch after finishing work. As he entered the lift at the foot overbridge connecting the Punjabi Bagh-Azadpur stretch of the Inner Ring Road, two young men followed him inside. He was holding his phone in his right hand, while his wallet was in the right pocket of his jeans.
One of the men snatched the phone from Pintu’s hand, while the other pulled out his wallet before the duo fled the spot. The stolen wallet contained his Aadhaar card, PAN card and ATM cards.During the investigation, police arrested the duo and found the stolen phone and the complainant’s Aadhaar card on them. The recoveries were seized in accordance with legal procedure. Police completed the investigation and filed the chargesheet before the court within the prescribed time.The matter was taken up under the speedy trial initiative before the court of chief judicial magistrate Upasana Sattija at Rohini Courts.According to police, the prosecution built a strong case by relying on the complainant’s testimony, statements of witnesses and the recovery of the stolen articles immediately after the incident. “Prompt collection of evidence, timely filing of the chargesheet and close coordination between the investigating officer and the prosecution branch helped ensure the case was disposed of expeditiously,” the DCP said.In its judgment dated July 7, the court convicted both Parveen and Rahul for offences punishable under Sections 304(2) (snatching) and 3(5) (common intention) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
