The Metropolitan Sessions Court, Vijayawada, sentenced two persons to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on finding them guilty of ganja smuggling. According to sources, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), based on a tip-off, intercepted a cargo vehicle in Vijayawada in 2018 and seized 1,394 kg of ganja, worth about ₹2.9 crore, and arrested two persons. They were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The contraband was being smuggled to Zaheerabad in Telangana from Sabbavaram of Visakhapatnam district. The court also imposed on them a fine of ₹1 lakh each. In default of the payment of fine, the convicts have to undergo simple imprisonment for three months more, the DRI said in a release on Wednesday (December 10).
