A 26-year-old man and his accomplice were arrested by Ratnagiri police for possession of a single barrel country made gun in his farmland at Kavarapalayam village near Arcot town in Ranipet along Palar river on Saturday.

Police said that based on an alert to Ranipet SP, Ayman Jamal, a special police team searched the house of the farmer, V. Deva Prabhu, and his accomplice G. Rajkumar, 29. The remote Kavarapalayam village is located in the fringes of reserve forests.

After more than two hours of searching, the team found the illegal gun from the cow shed inside his farmland behind his house. Gunpowder and other explosives were also found in the farmland. A case was registered against them. Later, the duo was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore.

Initial inquiry revealed that he brought the gun many years ago from his friends in Kerala to guard his crops from wild boars as the village is located near forests. They also used to hunt small wild animals in the forests during the night. A probe is underway.
