Two members killed, 58 injured at wedding party as bus plunges into irrigation tank near Rajapalayam

Two people at a marriage party were killed on the spot, and 58 others were injured when a speeding private bus got upset and fell into an irrigation tank near Dhalavaipuram on Saturday (June 20, 2026) night.

The deceased were identified as A. Selvam (55) and K. Kamatchi (50) of Kunnoor. The injured were rushed to the Government hospital in Rajapalayam.

The police said a marriage party had gone from Kunnoor to Ilanthiraikondan near Dhalavaipuram to bring the bride. The bus travelled hardly two kms from the bride’s house when the driver, Gopalakrishnan (28), attempted to negotiate a turning on the narrow road and lost control following which the vehicle plunged into an irrigation tank at around 10.30 p.m.

Police and local people rescued the injured from the mangled remains of the bus.

Social Welfare Minister, K. Jegadeshwari, visited the hospital where the injured were treated. District Collector, N.O. Sukhaputra, and Superintendent of Police, Gautam Goyal, also met the injured.
