United Arab Emirates’ presidential advisor Anwar Gargash on Friday said the chances of a US-Iran agreement remained “50-50", warning that renewed conflict would further destabilise the region and disrupt global trade.

Speaking at the Globsec conference in Prague, Gargash said Iran may have “over-negotiated" with the United States and risked missing a diplomatic opportunity. He stressed that any settlement must guarantee free movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments.

Gargash said the UAE opposed any attempt to politicise the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of global oil and LNG supplies pass. He warned that prolonged instability in the waterway would have serious consequences for global energy markets and European trade security.

He also said repeated attacks on UAE infrastructure, including energy and desalination facilities, highlighted the need for a long-term political solution rather than a temporary ceasefire.

The remarks came as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continued amid disagreements over Iran’s uranium enrichment programme and control over the Strait of Hormuz. While both sides have reported some progress, no final agreement has been reached yet.
