Laljit Singh Bhullar, once seen as one of the emerging faces of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab, has now stepped down from his ministerial post after he became centre of a controversy. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asked him to resign, saying it was necessary to ensure a fair probe.

The issue revolves around the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, a district manager with a state warehouse corporation in Amritsar. Before taking the extreme step, Randhawa recorded a video in which he accused Bhullar of causing him mental harassment and pressure. The video quickly went viral on social media platforms, drawing sharp reactions.

While Bhullar has strongly denied the claims, calling them “baseless", the matter escalated after a police case was registered against him. The FIR also names his father, Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and his personal assistant, Dilbagh Singh, and it was filed by Randhawa’s wife.

Who Is Laljit Singh Bhullar?

Bhullar, who is a farmer by background, entered into politics as a grassroots AAP worker and won the Patti seat in Tarn Taran during the 2022 Assembly elections.

His victory was seen as significant, as he defeated experienced leaders like SAD’s Adesh Partap Singh Kairon and Congress’s Harminder Singh Gill.

Following the win, he was given the transport portfolio in the Mann government.

However, becoming a minister did not save him from controversies.

Controversies Surrounding Laljit Singh Bhullar

Soon after becoming a minister, a video showed him standing out of a car’s sunroof during a victory rally—something that drew criticism for breaking safety rules. Opposition parties attacked him for encouraging VIP behaviour. He was also referred to as ‘Udta Mantri’ by some leaders.

Bhullar later admitted it was a mistake and apologised.

He was again in the news when an old video from the 2021 farmers’ protest surfaced. It showed him at the Red Fort along with actor-activist Deep Sidhu during the day protesters entered the monument. Opposition leaders questioned his presence and raised concerns, but Bhullar said he was there only to support the farmers’ movement.

In 2023, he landed in trouble once more after making remarks against former Congress MLA Harminder Singh Gill that were seen as casteist. The comments triggered backlash, and Bhullar later apologised, saying he spoke in the heat of the moment. Even Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann publicly expressed regret over the incident.

Now, with the latest case under investigation, Bhullar’s political future looks uncertain, as the controversy adds to a list of past incidents that have kept him in the headlines.
