At a time when societies continue to speak of women’s safety and equality, cases of extreme domestic abuse reveal a far darker reality behind closed doors. A relationship that began as a promise of love turned into prolonged violence for a young woman in the UK, culminating in acts of cruelty that left her fighting for survival.

24-year-old Maisie Henderson from Gateshead, UK, endured sustained physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her partner, Freddy Smith, while she was pregnant with his child. A UK court heard that between 2021 and 2022, Smith repeatedly assaulted Henderson despite being aware of her pregnancy.

Prosecutors detailed how Smith used weapons including a sword, a razor blade and an iron rod during the attacks. In one incident, he struck Henderson’s legs with a sword, causing deep wounds that have left permanent scars. On another occasion, he cut her thigh so severely with a blade while she was in the shower that muscle tissue was visible. The court was also told that Smith strangled her, struck her head with an iron rod and, during one assault, punched her more than 20 times.

In one of the most disturbing episodes described in court, Smith reportedly forced Henderson to drink his blood. Henderson said she often lay in bed during the assaults, praying for the safety of her unborn child.

The abuse extended beyond physical violence. Henderson told the court that Smith controlled her movements, locked her inside the house, confiscated her phone and prevented her from even looking at herself in a mirror. After the attacks, he would break down and seek sympathy, leading her to believe that such behaviour was normal.

The ordeal came to an end when Henderson’s mother reported her missing, prompting police intervention and Smith’s arrest. Smith was later sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm, strangulation and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour.

Henderson has since begun rebuilding her life. She is now studying nursing and midwifery at college and says she finally lives a “boring" but safe life, away from fear.
