Metro 2039: Launch window, gameplay and everything else we know so far
"The Stranger". This particular character is a reclusive individual who is haunted by traumatic memories.
Although he abandoned the metro in the past, he finds himself once again on the metro in the storyline. There are also suggestions of a comeback by the Dark Ones.In terms of gameplay, Metro 2039 will remain a first-person shooter that emphasises survival. It is necessary for players to pay attention to ammunition, crafting items, and medical items as they explore both aboveground and belowground locations. The game retains the series’ diegetic user interface. Instead of traditional on-screen elements, information is presented through in-game tools such as a wristwatch and a Geiger counter.
This design aims to maintain immersion during gameplay.Weapons from previous entries are set to return, including the Kalash and Shambler. The game will also introduce new enemy types, alongside returning creatures such as Nosalises. The overall design suggests a return to tighter, more closed-off spaces than the more open areas seen in Metro Exodus. The developers of the game have said that Metro 2039 will be darker than the previous games.
The studio admits that the ongoing conflict has affected how they write the story, which is partly based on real-life events.“War is now a reality,” the developer said during the presentation, highlighting how the game reflects the consequences of conflict rather than serving as a warning alone. This shift is expected to shape both the story and the game's atmosphere. The reveal trailer for Metro 2039 runs for around six minutes and focuses primarily on cinematic elements.
It introduces The Stranger, showcases parts of the metro, and offers a glimpse of the Novoreich faction.Early gameplay footage shows that the game will return to slower, more careful exploration, with a focus on survival and storytelling through the environment. The presentation also discussed what the studio calls "frozen stories," which unfold in settings that depict what happened right before the disaster.Metro 2039 is the next step in the franchise, building on what has already been done and improving the gameplay. Closer to the launch, more information will be released, such as prices and editions.
