The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Monday approved the transfer of 22 hectares of Agriculture Department land in Rae Bareli to the Department of Agricultural Education and Research for setting up a Horticulture College under Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur.

The decision, taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is aimed at strengthening agricultural and horticultural education and research in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed college will come up on land identified by the Rae Bareli district administration in Village Padera under Sadar tehsil. Of the total 44.888 hectares available at the site, 22 hectares will be transferred free of cost to the Department of Agricultural Education and Research.

The government said the new institution is expected to boost horticultural education, research and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies in Rae Bareli and neighbouring districts.

Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said, “The state currently has Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur; Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, Ayodhya; Banda University of Agriculture and Technology, Banda; Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut; and the privately run Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj. In addition, Mahatma Buddha University of Agriculture and Technology, Kushinagar, is being established to promote agricultural activities in eastern Uttar Pradesh."

He said all agricultural and technological universities in the state have horticulture departments engaged in teaching and research. In this sequence, a proposal has been prepared to establish a Horticulture College in Rae Bareli under Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 50 crore.

Shahi added that the proposed college would strengthen horticultural education and research while promoting modern agricultural technologies in the state. It would also provide students from eastern Uttar Pradesh with greater access to quality agricultural education.
