The Delhi Police’s Special Cell has detained a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district on suspicion of involvement in terror-related activities and brought him to the national capital for questioning, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying on Sunday.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, the individual, identified as Rizwan Ahmad, is a resident of the Chhawani locality in Padrauna town.
His name reportedly surfaced during the investigation of a case being handled by the Delhi Police Special Cell, prompting the central agency to initiate action.
Officials told PTI that a 10-member team of the Special Cell, headed by Inspector Nishant Dahiya, arrived in Padrauna late on Saturday evening.
Acting in coordination with local police authorities, the team took Ahmad into custody and subsequently transported him to Delhi for further investigation.
The Special Cell also seized Ahmad’s electronic devices, including his mobile phone and laptop, as part of the probe.
These devices are expected to be examined for digital evidence that may assist investigators in establishing possible links or communication trails, police officials said.
NO LOCAL CASE REGISTERED, POLICE STEP UP VIGILANCE
Superintendent of Police Keshav Kumar confirmed that no case has been registered against Ahmad at the local level in Kushinagar so far.
However, authorities have begun gathering information about his family members, background and social contacts as part of routine verification procedures.
Police officials added that security vigilance has been intensified across the district following the development, in view of the sensitivity of the allegations and the ongoing probe being conducted by the Special Cell.
PAST CASE IN MUMBAI UNDER SCRUTINY
According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, Ahmad had travelled to Mumbai around 10 years ago in search of employment opportunities.
However, he was later arrested in connection with a separate terror-related case and remained in jail in Mumbai between 2017 and 2023.
Officials said that during that earlier case, explosives were reportedly recovered from his residence in Mumbai.
Investigators had also found phone records allegedly indicating international calls and suspected links with the terrorist organisation ISIS, PTI quoted police sources as saying.
Authorities emphasised that further details are expected to emerge as the Special Cell continues its investigation into the matter.
