A 27-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad is battling for life after he got severely injured in a military projectile strike that hit a residential site in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Kharj during the ongoing conflict in West Asia, officials said.
The victim, identified as Mohd Azam, a resident of Jafraabad village in the Thakurdwara area of Moradabad, had travelled to Saudi Arabia about three-and-a-half years ago to work as a diesel mechanic.
As per officials, Azam is currently battling for his life in a hospital in Riyadh, where he is reportedly on ventilator support.
His family members have appealed to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure proper medical treatment and help bring him back to India.
Azam’s brother, Kasim Ali, said the family learnt about the incident through one of Azam’s colleagues. “I came to know that he is critical and is in ICU," Ali told Times of India.
“He had gone there to earn a livelihood. Now we are told he is badly injured and on ventilator. We are poor people and request the government to help ensure his treatment and bring him back home," he added.
According to the Saudi Civil Defence, the incident occurred when a military projectile fell on a residential site belonging to a maintenance and cleaning company in Al-Kharj governorate. The attack killed two Bangladeshi nationals and injured 11 other Bangladeshi residents and Mohd Azam, besides causing damage to property.
Earlier reports had suggested that an Indian national had died in the incident. However, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh clarified that no Indian citizen was killed.
In a post on X, the Embassy said it was a relief that there was no Indian fatality and confirmed that an embassy official had visited the injured Indian national in Al-Kharj. Azam is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital.
“It is a matter of relief that there has been no Indian fatality in the unfortunate incident at Al Kharj yesterday evening. The Embassy has been in touch with the concerned Saudi authorities regarding this issue," it said.
Meanwhile, the Indian mission in Saudi Arabia has advised all Indian nationals in the country to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities amid rising tensions in West Asia.
“All Indian nationals currently in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are advised to remain vigilant, strictly adhere to the safety guidelines prevalent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and follow advisories issued by the local authorities and the Embassy," the mission said.
Tensions surged in West Asia after the United States and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran that have widened the conflict across parts of the Gulf region.
