A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad allegedly killed his wife after a dispute over her daily routine. The 35-year-old victim, identified as Poonam Gupta, had returned home on Wednesday morning when an argument reportedly turned violent.
The accused, Shobhit Gupta is a scrap dealer from the Katghar area. He reportedly attacked his wife with an iron rod used for closing shop shutters, hitting her on the head and causing fatal injuries, according to a report by NDTV.
After the incident, the accused is believed to have stayed inside the house for several hours. During this time, he allegedly placed the body on the bed and tried to make the death appear accidental. When his daughter came back from school and asked about her mother, he reportedly avoided answering and sent her away.
Several hours later, Shobhit contacted the police, claiming that his wife had suffered injuries after a fall. However, when officers reached the spot, they found severe head wounds that did not match his version of events. During questioning, he later admitted to the crime, officials said.
“It was a dispute between a husband and wife. The husband struck his wife on the head with a metal rod used for closing the shutter, resulting in her death. Based on the written complaint filed by the family members, a case has been registered against the accused, and an investigation has been initiated," Superintendent of Police Ranvijay Singh was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The victim’s family has accused the husband of long-term harassment. Her brother claimed that she had faced repeated abuse and that earlier attempts had also been made to harm her.
“He used to harass my sister even before this incident. We received the shocking news that my brother-in-law had murdered my sister. We demand strict action against him," he added.
