UP Plans Mini Biogas Plants In 1 Lakh Rural Homes, Linking Cow Protection With Clean Energy

UP plans over one lakh household mini biogas plants using cow dung, cutting LPG use, producing organic manure, boosting rural incomes and cow protection under Yogi Adityanath.

The Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to roll out an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting cow protection, clean energy and rural self-reliance by installing mini biogas plants in more than one lakh rural households across the state.

The proposal, prepared by the Uttar Pradesh Gauseva Commission, seeks to encourage families to use cow dung and organic waste to generate clean cooking fuel, reducing dependence on LPG while also boosting rural incomes.

According to officials, the mini biogas plants can be installed at a cost ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. The scheme is being planned in line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s emphasis on cow protection and sustainable rural development.

Savings on LPG, Boost for Rural Economy

The state government believes the initiative can significantly reduce household expenditure on cooking gas while creating a sustainable source of energy for rural families.

Uttar Pradesh Gauseva Commission Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta said the use of biogas would lower LPG consumption and lead to substantial savings for households.

“Once the scheme is implemented, the consumption of LPG in kitchens will decline, resulting in significant savings in household expenses," Gupta said.

Organic Manure and Additional Income

Apart from generating fuel, the plants will also produce slurry, a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used as organic manure.

Officials say this could help farmers reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, lower cultivation costs and improve soil health. The availability of organic manure is also expected to encourage chemical-free farming and create opportunities for additional income.

Farmers will be able to use the slurry generated by the plants in their fields or sell it, creating an additional revenue stream alongside cattle rearing.

Cow Protection Through Economic Incentives

The Yogi government sees the project as a way of linking cow protection with economic activity. By making cattle ownership financially beneficial, officials hope the initiative will strengthen cow conservation efforts while supporting rural livelihoods.

The proposal is part of a broader effort to integrate cattle rearing, renewable energy and agricultural development into a single rural development model.

Towards Rural Self-Reliance

According to the government, the initiative is expected to strengthen the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by helping villages become more energy self-sufficient.

Officials believe the scheme can provide a major boost to the rural economy by creating a sustainable cycle in which cow dung is converted into clean fuel and organic fertilizer, benefiting both households and farmers.

Gupta described the project as a model of “prosperity through cow service", saying it would allow cow protection, clean energy generation and rural self-reliance to advance together.

If implemented, Uttar Pradesh would become one of the largest states in the country to promote household-level biogas generation on such a scale.
